Conversation Leaders: Nathan Towney and Larissa Minniecon
Nathan Towney is a proud Wiradjur1 man from Wellington, NSW, and an outstanding education leader. A former Principal of Newcastle High School, he is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor Engagement and Equity at the University of Newcastle. Recognised with the 2023 Newcastle Citizen of the Year Award, the NSW Department of Education Regional Director’s Award of Excellence, and the National Dreamtime Educator of the Year Award, Nathan has led the development of the University’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and Research Framework. He is committed to culturally safe education, reconciliation, and collaborative Indigenous health research, fostering strong partnerships through his authentic and innovative leadership.
Larissa Minniecon is a proud Kabi Kabi, Gureng Gureng, Australian South Sea Islander, and Zenadth Kes woman who lives, works, and dreams on Gadigal Land. She holds a Master’s in Narrative Therapy and Community Work from the University of Melbourne, and brings more than 20 years’ experience in Community Development and Indigenous Health across remote, rural, and urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Currently serving as Truth-telling and Reconciliation Missioner for the Anglican Board of Mission, Australia, and as an Indigenous Emergency Relief Worker with St John’s Anglican Church, Glebe, Larissa also helps lead Scarred Tree Indigenous Ministries and chairs the Glebe NAIDOC Committee. A sought-after speaker, consultant and educator, Larissa is committed to healing, reconciliation, cultural celebration and hope.
